SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) voted to add a constitutional amendment to the ballot in 2020 that would allow voters to decide if Illinois should change our income tax structure to a fair tax.
Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 1 would give Illinoisans the opportunity to abandon an extremely regressive tax system that makes our state one of the most unfair tax states in the country.
“With the current flat tax, a cashier in Elk Grove Village pays the exact same rate as a hedge fund manager in Chicago,” Murphy said. “With a fair tax, we can not only bring relief to working families, but relief to our state’s financial crisis.”
A fair tax would tax lower incomes at lower rates and higher incomes at higher rates, provided voters approve the plan at the ballot box in 2020, thus protecting middle income households in the 28th district
Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 1 passed the Senate and will now move to the House for consideration.
