DES PLAINES – State Senator Laura Murphy is proud to announce two organizations in the 28th District will be receiving a total of $243,000 for literacy programs, enhancements, workplace skills development and more.
“Literacy and workplace skills enhancement programs are crucial for ensuring all members of our community are granted opportunities to succeed,” said Murphy (D-Des Plaines). “These grants will increase access to literacy programs for children and adults in our community, as well as providing necessary workforce development programs.”
The latest round of funding through the Illinois Secretary of State includes more than $28 million for library services and literacy programs throughout Illinois. The grants will enhance online catalogs at local libraries, support day-to-day operations and expand interlibrary loan programs. Funding also supports radio information services that provide local news and information to individuals who cannot read standard print materials. Literacy grants promote basic reading, math, writing and English language skills through adult, family and workplace literacy programs.
In Murphy’s district, two local organizations are set to receive a total of $243,000, including:
- Oakton College, Workplace Skills Enhancement - $88,000
- Oakton College, Adult Volunteer Literacy - $105,000
- Early Childhood Alliance, Niles Township - $50,000
