humantSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) is working to fight human trafficking in Illinois by requiring more training on the issue as well as creating stronger penalties for the crime.

She advanced legislation today that would create the Lodging Establishment Human Trafficking Recognition Training Act, which will require hotels and motels to train employees on how to recognize human trafficking and how to alert authorities.

“Hotels and motels have been shown to be popular locations for human trafficking,” Murphy said. “If we want to combat this issue head on, we have to ensure that hospitality staff are educated, aware and putting forth a conscious effort to save victims and catch traffickers.”

Murphy’s measure also requires the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board to provide training for police officers to detect human trafficking.

“I don’t think we should stop here,” Murphy said. “Human trafficking is unlike any other crime. It involves the selling of humans. Everyone needs to be educated on this growing epidemic because it doesn’t just happen behind closed doors; it can be anywhere.”

Senate Bill 1890 passed both chambers with bipartisan support and now awaits action by the governor.

1111123SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) is excited to announce that a senior housing development in Mt. Prospect will receive a tax credit.

“Affordable housing is an issue across the state and one that my constituents are deeply concerned about,” Murphy said. “It helps those with low-incomes and benefits the entire community by supporting jobs.”

Kensington Senior Residences at Randhurst in Mt. Prospect is one of 25 Affordable Housing Developments receiving the federal tax incentive. With this award, the residences will be getting a new three-story development that will feature 74 affordable units and amenities for seniors 55 and older from the Perlmark Housing Group. Some of the amenities include a fitness room and library.

In total, $28 million in federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits will be awarded to 16 different counties across Illinois.

The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit is a federal program that facilitates the creation and preservation of affordable housing. It has created more than 90,970 units in the state, generating $4.9 billion in private capital for affordable housing.

Fair tax infographicFacebook Image.jpgSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) voted to add a constitutional amendment to the ballot in 2020 that would allow voters to decide if Illinois should change our income tax structure to a fair tax.

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 1 would give Illinoisans the opportunity to abandon an extremely regressive tax system that makes our state one of the most unfair tax states in the country.

“With the current flat tax, a cashier in Elk Grove Village pays the exact same rate as a hedge fund manager in Chicago,” Murphy said. “With a fair tax, we can not only bring relief to working families, but relief to our state’s financial crisis.”

A fair tax would tax lower incomes at lower rates and higher incomes at higher rates, provided voters approve the plan at the ballot box in 2020, thus protecting middle income households in the 28th district

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 1 passed the Senate and will now move to the House for consideration.
